Gutter and Downspout Maintenance to Prevent Flooding

When gutters clog or downspouts dump water at the foundation, Colorado monsoon bursts and spring melt can overwhelm drainage in minutes. Simple exterior water management is one of the highest-ROI ways to prevent basement and crawl-space claims.

Clean on a Seasonal Rhythm

Clear leaves, pine needles, and shingle grit from gutters at least twice a year—more often if you have mature trees. After major wind or hail events along the Front Range, check for bent sections and separated joints that spill water behind the fascia.

Extend Downspouts Away From the House

Downspouts should discharge at least six feet from the foundation whenever grading allows. Short stubs that empty into flower beds next to the wall are a common cause of seepage in Centennial, Aurora, and Littleton homes. Use extensions, splash blocks, or buried drains that daylight to a safe grade.

Watch Grading and Splashback

Soil and mulch should slope away from the foundation. Settled backfill after landscaping projects often creates a bowl that holds water against the wall. Fix grade before you invest only in interior waterproofing.

Guards Help—They Do Not Replace Inspection

Gutter guards reduce debris but still need periodic checks. Ice, seed pods, and fine grit can accumulate above or below guards. Confirm hangers are secure so snow loads do not pull gutters away from the roof edge.

Pair gutter discipline with sump pump readiness and leak awareness for a layered defense against water damage claims.
