Preventing Sewer Backup Damage

Sewer and drain backups can cause extensive water damage and present serious health hazards. Prevention combines maintenance, smart landscaping, and—where appropriate—backflow devices.

Understand Your Risk

Older neighborhoods, combined sewer systems, and properties below street level may face higher backup risk. Ask your municipality about mainline maintenance and history of area flooding.

Prevent Grease and Debris

Never pour grease or oil down drains. Use baskets in sinks and tubs to catch hair and food scraps. Flush only human waste and toilet paper—wipes labeled "flushable" often clog lines.

Backwater Valves and Sump Pits

A licensed plumber can install a backwater valve on your main sewer line so sewage cannot flow back into the home during surges. If you have a basement floor drain connected to sanitary lines, ask whether an appropriate check valve or disconnect strategy applies.

Insurance Note

Standard property policies often exclude or limit sewer backup unless you add an endorsement. Review coverage with your agent while you invest in prevention.
